The Dandenong Ranges

The Dandenong Ranges National Park is a 3,540-hectare national park that includes Sherbrooke Forest and Upper Ferntree Gully bushland, with bushwalks for all abilities and beautiful picnic areas and famous for its Lyrebird population.

Puffing Billy is not to be missed; Australia's favourite steam train winds its way through the gullies and hills.

Phillip Island

Phillip Island

Penguin Parade.  At Summerland Beach the Little Penguins arrive at sunset. The award-winning Visitors Centre is open from 10am.

Koalas are readily found on Phillip Island, and there are great beaches for swimming, surfing and fishing around the island. Watch the Fur Seals on Seal Rocks.

Definitely worth a visit, and make a day of it: PHILLIP ISLAND

St Kilda Penguins

Melbourne's Little Penguins

The other Penguin Parade. A colony of around 1400 Little Penguins lives around the breakwater and pier in St Kilda.  Every evening, year-round, at about 30 minutes after sunset, they return to their homes in the rocks. 

A viewing platform has been created as part of the redevelopment of the iconic St Kilda pier, but you will need a ticket. 

Tickets are free, however bookings are essential. Plan ahead.

If you are interested in The Arts, Music and Culture, then you should definitely spend time in Melbourne's Arts Precinct.  Then follow the Melbourne Street Art Walk.

There's plenty to see and do around Dandenong and close to the park is Bunjil Place a large arts and entertainment facility in Narre Warren. 

Visit Cruden Farm and the McClelland art gallery and sculpture park in Frankston, and other Galleries on the Mornington Peninsula.

Plonk yourself in the middle of Victoria's most renown wine regions.  

The Yarra Valley includes the cellar doors of De Bortoli, Fergusson, Zonzo, Yering Station, Punt Road, and Hubert Estate.

The Mornington Peninsula Wine Region offering, 50 boutique cellar doors, is a significant area within Victoria's Pinot Coast.

From Frankston to Portsea are the most picturesque Peninsula Beaches on Port Phillip Bay, including Dromana, Rosebud and Sorrento.

On Westernport Bay, the beaches at Somers, Pt. Leo and Shoreham offer very safe swimming and lovely walks. 

The bays offer wonderful fishing from jetty or boat and for the more adventurous it is very easy to get to Bass Straight.

There are large shopping centres in Dandenong and Frankston, and you can travel to Melbourne's best shopping strips from Dandenong by train. 

Dandenong Market is open Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Local Craft Markets throughout the area are open most weekends.

And then, of course, there is the Queen of Melbourne Markets: The Queen Victoria Market.

Ferry Services

Ferry Services

Car and passenger ferry services can take you to Queenscliff and Phillip Island and French Island.

The Westernport Ferries will take you to Phillip Island and French Island from Stony Point.

From the Dandenong Tourist Park, do the self-driving Around the Bay tour. The Searoad Ferries will take you and your car from Sorrento to Queenscliff.
